Today, ��ԭ�� announced the launch of the Suzanne McGraw Scholars Program, made possible by a transformative philanthropic gift of more than $9 million from the Suzanne McGraw Foundation. The gift represents the largest in ��ԭ��'s history and will support a groundbreaking initiative to prepare highly skilled early childhood educators while addressing the urgent need for qualified early childhood educators in the region.

“We are deeply grateful to the Suzanne McGraw Foundation for this extraordinary gift and partnership, which demonstrates our shared vision for educational access and community impact,” said Susan L. Parish, PhD, MSW, president of ��ԭ��. “The Suzanne McGraw Scholars Program will provide students with a combination of financial assistance, meaningful classroom experiences, and mentorship. This innovative model will create a sustainable, replicable model for aggressively addressing the region’s urgent teacher shortage. Scholars will graduate not only with degrees and experience but as prepared leaders ready to inspire in classrooms, communities, and beyond.”

“The Suzanne McGraw Foundation is excited to partner with ��ԭ�� to address the urgent need to attract and train students for careers in early childhood education, especially for children with special needs,” said the Board of the Suzanne McGraw Foundation. “By providing scholarships and valuable work experience, we hope to create a model for addressing the shortage of qualified early childhood educators and to eliminate the crushing burden of student loan debt.”

Launching in Fall 2026, the program will prepare 25 new early childhood educators each year through a structured, work-integrated degree program. Suzanne McGraw Scholars will receive comprehensive financial support, dedicated mentoring, and robust professional development as they pursue ��ԭ��'s B.S. in Teaching Students with Disabilities (PreK–Grade 12) program. Scholars will also have the opportunity to continue into an accelerated M.S. degree in Early Childhood Education at no tuition cost to the scholar.

A distinguishing feature of the program is its earn-while-you-learn model. Scholars will work in early childhood education classrooms throughout their studies, gaining invaluable hands-on experience while receiving financial compensation. Upon graduation, Scholars commit to working in the field for at least one year, ensuring sustained impact in early childhood education when it's needed most.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Latino U College Access (LUCA), a leading Westchester County nonprofit dedicated to supporting low-income, first-generation students in their pursuit of higher education. The agreement establishes a collaborative relationship designed to expand postsecondary opportunities, strengthen student support and enhance financial accessibility for LUCA Scholars enrolling at ��ԭ��. The partnership also reflects ��ԭ��’s commitment to making higher education attainable by working to provide competitive, need-based financial aid packages to admitted LUCA students.

“This partnership reflects ��ԭ��’s mission to provide transformative educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds,” said Susan L. Parish, PhD, MSW, president of ��ԭ��. “We are proud to work alongside Latino U College Access in expanding pathways for talented first-generation students and ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive.”

“This partnership with ��ԭ�� reflects our shared commitment to expanding access to higher education,” said Shirley Acevedo Buontempo, founder and executive director of LUCA. ”Together, we are strengthening academic and personal support for first-generation students in Westchester County and creating meaningful pathways to college and lifelong success. In partnership with ��ԭ��, we are creating pathways to higher education that reflect our joint belief in the transformative power of education — because when students succeed, communities flourish.”

Under the MOU, ��ԭ�� and LUCA will coordinate outreach efforts to LUCA high school students and provide structured support for LUCA Scholars who matriculate at ��ԭ��. LUCA will continue to support its alumni who matriculate at ��ԭ�� through the organization’s Post-Secondary Program, offering mentoring, college and career advising, and when applicable, access to emergency need grants and other financial incentives designed to promote persistence and student success.

��ԭ��, in turn, will work to meet the full financial need of incoming LUCA Scholars by maximizing federal, state, and institutional aid. Additionally, ��ԭ�� will host annual campus visits to introduce LUCA students to academic programs, student services and the broader campus environment. ��ԭ�� will also support LUCA programming by contributing subject-matter expertise and volunteers to initiatives such as College Knowledge workshops and FAFSA completion sessions.

The partnership holds special significance for students who have benefited from both organizations, as it formalizes a pathway they have experienced firsthand—one that combines early college access, sustained mentorship, and a supportive university environment to help first-generation students persist, graduate, and achieve long-term success.

“As an alumna of both LUCA and ��ԭ��, this alliance means a great deal to me,” said Karol Toral, LUCA and ��ԭ�� alumna. “It represents a major step forward in expanding access to college education for the next generation of Latino scholars and brings together two organizations that were instrumental in my own educational journey. I look forward to seeing how this partnership empowers LUCA Scholars to pursue higher education with confidence, support and the freedom to truly spread their wings.”

Kevin Arpi, LUCA Scholar and ��ԭ�� student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science, echoed that sentiment, highlighting the role both institutions played in his academic growth. “Transitioning from Westchester Community College to ��ԭ�� was a pivotal chapter in my journey,” Arpi said. “I found mentors who believed in me and a community that fueled my passion for biomedical sciences. LUCA played a critical role in supporting that transition, and ��ԭ�� provided an environment that helped shape my aspirations and prepare me for the next steps in my career.”

LUCA delivers programs and partners with eight high schools in Westchester County (Bedford, Elmsford, New Rochelle, Ossining, Peekskill, Port Chester, Sleepy Hollow, and White Plains).

With more than 25 years of experience in the advertising industry, Woodard brings a wealth of expertise in innovation, leadership and strategic communication to the University’s governing body.

Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “His extraordinary professional accomplishments and deep commitment to community service make him a tremendous asset to ��ԭ�� as we continue to prepare our students to succeed in a rapidly changing world.”

Woodard is a highly regarded advertising executive who has led agencies in creating breakthrough campaigns for a diverse roster of clients including General Motors, Motorola, Heineken, Sprint, Western Union, Comcast, GlaxoSmithKline, Kodak, Mars, Earthlink and the Snapple Beverage Group, among many others. His work has earned some of the industry’s highest honors, including two O’Toole Awards for Advertising Agency of the Year, a Gold Effie and the prestigious Cannes Gold Lion for the iconic Oprah Car Giveaway.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Woodard has been an influential leader within the advertising community, serving as chair of the 4A’s New York Council, a director of Advertising Week and a weekly columnist for ABC News. His thought leadership extends to frequent appearances as a lecturer and instructor, as well as media contributions on CNN, CNBC, ABC and the BBC. He is also the co-author of “Inside the Minds: Advertising as a Branding Tool” and “Point Me in The Right Direction,” a book of daily devotionals.

Woodard’s commitment to service is reflected in his long history of board involvement. He has held leadership roles with organizations such as the YMCA, the Spanish Action League and the Board of Visitors for Syracuse University’s Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics. He served on the board of International Speedway Corporation (NASCAR) and the V Foundation for Cancer Research. He currently serves on the NASCAR Foundation board.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced the launch of its new branding campaign, “Every Moment Matters,” a strategic initiative designed to highlight the university’s commitment to supporting students through every stage of their educational journey. The campaign, which is part of ��ԭ��’s 75th anniversary celebration and captures the many meaningful moments—both big and small—that shape the student experience at ��ԭ��.

“For 75 years, ��ԭ�� has opened doors and changed lives,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “We remain steadfast in our mission to ensure every student has the support they need to thrive. Because for us, it’s not just about welcoming students through our doors—it’s about walking beside them through every part of their journey. This campaign captures the spirit of our mission, recognizing that every moment that shapes a student’s path toward success matters.”

��ԭ�� worked with creative agency Familiar Creatures, who helped relaunch ��ԭ�� College as ��ԭ�� in 2023, to conceptualize and execute the new campaign. Through visual storytelling, the “Every Moment Matters” campaign highlights the human side of higher education and reinforces ��ԭ��’s student-centered mission. It conveys the message that ��ԭ�� is there every step of the way—ensuring students have the guidance, resources and encouragement they need to succeed.

“The application process has radically changed in the last couple years making it even more paramount that prospective students know who we are and what we’re about.,” said Christian Connelly, associate vice president for Marketing & Communications at ��ԭ��. “We don’t just showcase and tout the milestones of the college experience; it’s about us being there for them through every moment in between. Familiar Creatures found a memorable and artful way to communicate our value proposition yet again.”

“In the higher ed space, ��ԭ�� is a true challenger brand—fighting for attention amongst much bigger, well-established schools who dominate all our marketing channels,” said Justin Bajan, co-Founder/creative director of Familiar Creatures. “We relished the chance to cut through the noise with something unexpected and wholly unique to ��ԭ��.”

Today, Excelencia in Education, a national leader in catalyzing institutional transformation for student success in higher education, announced that ��ԭ�� has earned the Seal of Excelencia recertification. ��ԭ�� is one of 18 colleges and universities to earn the Seal in 2025, reaffirming its place in a group of nearly 50 institutions that are taking responsibility for improving Latino, and all, student success.

Seal of Excelencia certified institutions produce outsized impact on student outcomes — representing less than 1% of all colleges and universities in the U.S., yet enrolling 16% and graduating 18% of Latino students nationwide, as well as enrolling 7% and graduating 8% of all students.

The Seal is a rigorous, data-driven certification, not an award or ranking. Institutions earn the Seal by going beyond enrollment to intentionally serve Latino, and all, students, and by taking responsibility and accountability for providing access to excellence. The Seal framework aligns data, practice, and leadership to move institutions beyond isolated programs toward systemic change and investment that provides institutional value to students, their families, and their communities.

“Earning the Seal of Excelencia recertification is deeply meaningful to us at ��ԭ��.,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “When we first earned the Seal in 2022, ��ԭ�� became the nation’s first private university and New York State’s first Hispanic-Serving Institution to receive this recognition. It affirms our commitment to supporting Hispanic students to graduate on time and launch meaningful careers. Receiving this recertification during our 75th anniversary is especially fitting, as ��ԭ��’s story has always been about opening doors, building networks, and creating pathways to opportunity for Latino students — and for all students — who walk through our doors.”

“Seal of Excelencia certified institutions are investing in transformation, ensuring access to excellence, and becoming places where Latino, and all, students thrive,” said Deborah Santiago, co-founder and CEO of Excelencia in Education. “These institutions have made demonstrable efforts to ensure students’ return on investment in a degree while cultivating talent that fuels our country’s future.”

Higher education, business, philanthropy, and government leaders in Excelencia’s community of common cause convened in Washington, D.C., to recognize ��ԭ�� as one of five institutions that earned the Seal of Excelencia recertification. In addition, five other institutions earned certification for the first time, and eight other institutions earned Excelencia’s new Intentionally Thriving Institution (ITI) designation, which extends impact beyond the educational pathway and recognizes positive impact in preparing students for, and connecting them to, the workforce.

“Excelencia is proud to continue to catalyze and support colleges and universities that earn the Seal of Excelencia for their impact and intentional efforts to deliver on the promise of higher education for all students. Through our collaboration, we build talent for our country’s workforce and civic leadership,” said Sarita Brown, co-founder and president of Excelencia in Education.

��ԭ�� is the largest, private non-profit Hispanic-Serving Institution in New York. Forty-seven percent of ��ԭ��’s undergraduate student population is Hispanic, a number that has grown more than 10% in the past seven years. According to analysis by Excelencia in Education, “Latino College Completion: United States 2023, ��ԭ�� is ranked 19th among enrolling and 10th in graduating Latinos in the state of New York.

��ԭ�� is committed to serving and supporting Latino students intentionally, by creating the conditions that maximize their educational success. The University has invested in several transformational strategies to serve Hispanic students and position them to succeed, including its PACT personal mentoring program. Since the advent of the PACT program, retention and graduation rates of Latino and all students at ��ԭ�� have seen remarkable improvement.

Before ��ԭ�� earned the Seal of Excelencia for the first time in 2022, university leadership made the decision to join Excelencia’s national Excelencia in Action (E-Action) network. The network includes over 200 higher education leaders committed to advancing Latino, and all, student success on their campuses. Institutions affiliated with the E-Action network are eligible to apply for the Seal.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced its recognition by U.S. News & World Report as a top performer on Social Mobility in the publication’s 2026 Best Colleges rankings. This marks the fifth consecutive year that ��ԭ�� has earned this distinction, underscoring the University’s ongoing commitment to expanding access and opportunity for all students.

“Being recognized once again as a national leader in social mobility — in the same year we celebrate our 75th anniversary — is especially meaningful,” said Susan L. ��ԭ�� ranked in the top 17% of schools in the northern region for Social Mobility, which measures the graduation rates of students receiving federal Pell Grants. ��ԭ�� has earned a spot in the Social Mobility category since its addition to the Best College Rankings in 2019. This distinction shows ��ԭ��’s commitment to ensure educational access and college completion for non-traditional students, including those who may be demographically underrepresented in higher education, demonstrate high financial need, or identify as first-generation college students.

This fall, ��ԭ�� kicks off a yearlong celebration of its 75th Anniversary, honoring a journey that began in 1950 with a powerful mission: to provide access and opportunity in higher education. The 75th anniversary is more than a look back—it’s a year to bring students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community together to celebrate ��ԭ��’s impact, progress and possibility.

“For 75 years, ��ԭ�� has been a place where access meets excellence, empowering generations of students to transform their lives,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “This anniversary is not only a chance to honor our past but also to affirm our vision for the future as we continue to thrive and lead in higher education.”

From its early days as ��ԭ�� College, through its expansion to a four-year institution in 1961, its transformation into an independent, non-sectarian university in the 1970s, and most recently, its historic transition to ��ԭ�� in 2023, the institution has been defined by growth, resilience and an unwavering commitment to student success.

Today, ��ԭ�� is the region’s largest private minority-serving institution and a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution. The University has more than 73,000 alumni, serves over 9,000 enrolled students across six academic schools and offers more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs. Each year, thousands of graduates, many the first in their families to attend college, go on to achieve personal and professional success, a testament to ��ԭ��’s enduring mission.

Celebrating 75 Years Together

Throughout the academic year, ��ԭ�� will host a series of special events designed to bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni and the surrounding communities.

The celebration will kick off with the Founders’ Festival on September 20, a campus and community-wide event featuring food trucks, live music, games, and activities for all ages. The day will include the dedication of a new commemorative clock on the Westchester campus, a new campus centerpiece, and close with a spectacular drone show lighting up the night sky.

Additional anniversary events will continue throughout the year, creating opportunities to celebrate, reconnect and look ahead.

A seasoned leader in higher education advancement, Manfra has more than 20 years of experience in fundraising, alumni engagement, marketing and communications and institutional strategy.

“We are thrilled to welcome Matt Manfra to ��ԭ��,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “His experience and commitment to the transformative power of higher education will be instrumental in building meaningful relationships with our alumni, donors and stakeholders, and in supporting ��ԭ��’s continued growth and impact.”

“I am excited to be joining ��ԭ�� and look forward to enhancing the institution’s fundraising and engagement efforts,” said Matt Manfra, new vice president for institutional advancement for ��ԭ��. “The University has terrific momentum, strong leadership and an incredible mission, essential elements for future growth and success.”

Manfra joins ��ԭ�� from Georgian Court University, where he also served as vice president for institutional advancement. There, he provided strategic leadership across all advancement functions, including fundraising, alumni relations, grants, marketing and communications, government relations and securing all non-tuition revenue.

Prior to his role at Georgian Court University, Manfra held several leadership positions at George Washington University (GW), most recently as senior associate vice president for alumni relations and annual giving. In February 2017, he was named interim vice president for development and alumni relations and led the team that completed GW's Making History comprehensive campaign. That $1 billion campaign was the largest in their history and was completed one year ahead of schedule.

His leadership journey also includes roles at Syracuse University, where he oversaw annual giving and alumni relations as the inaugural assistant vice president for alumni engagement; the University of Northern Colorado, where he served as assistant vice president for alumni relations and led efforts to reorganize the alumni association and Rutgers University, where he was responsible for engaging alumni and donors around the world.

A New Jersey native, Manfra began his career at his alma mater, The College of New Jersey, where he held roles in human resources, admissions, and advancement. He has held leadership and board positions with several professional and civic organizations, including the Council for Advancement & Support of Education (CASE) and the Association of Private College and University Alumni Directors (PCUAD). He is currently first vice president of the board of trustees at Ocean’s Harbor House in Toms River, NJ.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced it has been named to Phi Theta Kappa’s 2025 Transfer Honor Roll, a national recognition that celebrates institutions that excel in creating supportive, dynamic, innovative pathways for community college transfer students. ��ԭ�� is among 251 colleges and universities across the country selected by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an international honor society for students at two-year colleges.

“We are honored to be recognized by Phi Theta Kappa for our efforts to create accessible pathways and support systems for transfer students,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “This reflects our ongoing commitment to student success, regardless of where their educational journey begins.”

The Transfer Honor Roll is determined by 40 key metrics related to the support and success of transfer students, including college cost and financial aid, campus life for transfer, admission practices, and bachelor’s degree completion. It was based on analysis from the National Student Clearinghouse, and on data submitted through the four-year institution’s profile on PTK Connect, Phi Theta Kappa’s online tool designed to help students find their best-fit colleges and career pathways.

“I’m proud of the transfer outcomes we’re seeing at these Honor Roll colleges,” said Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa. “These colleges are doing more than just opening doors—they’re walking students through them. Today, ��ԭ�� announced the appointment of James B. Jenkins as Chair of the Board of Trustees (BOT). A dedicated member of the Board since 2020, Jenkins brings a dynamic combination of professional experience, strategic leadership and heartfelt commitment to higher education.

“Jim Jenkins has demonstrated a deep commitment to ��ԭ��’s mission, and we are thrilled to welcome him as Chair of the Board of Trustees,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “As we approach our 75th anniversary and prepare for the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of higher education, we look forward to his leadership in guiding the university into its next era of innovation and impact.”

“I am honored to take on this new role and to support ��ԭ�� at such a pivotal time in its history,” said new Board of Trustees Chair James B. Jenkins. “I look forward to working alongside my fellow trustees, President Susan L. Parish and the broader university community to ensure that every student has access to a high-quality, affordable education.”

Jenkins currently serves as president of Canachagala Corp. where he leads efforts in real asset management, including commodity trade, logistics, infrastructure, risk management, compliance and corporate governance. In addition to leading Canachagala Corp., Jenkins previously held several senior executive roles, including CEO of Westway Group Inc. from 2010 to 2013, where he guided the company through a series of mergers and acquisitions that resulted in its integration with EQT Infrastructure II and ED&F Man. Under his leadership, Westway became North America’s largest producer of liquid feed supplements, with operations spanning 31 locations globally. He also served as managing director of ED&F Man’s Commodity Services Division, president of ED&F Man Cocoa, Inc. and was actively involved with the New York Board of Trade’s Cocoa and Control Committees. Jenkins also served as chairman of the Cocoa Merchants’ Association of America and contributed to several of the organization’s key committees.

Over the past five years, Jenkins has served and contributed to several key committees on ��ԭ��’s BOT, including the Executive Committee, the Academic and Student Affairs Committee, the Audit Committee, the Compensation Committee and the Development Committee. In addition to Board service, he has actively supported athletes, students and alumni alike—most notably through a series of workshops on personal finance and debt management for graduating seniors and alumni, which began in 2021. Beyond his work with ��ԭ��, Jenkins has taught at higher education institutions including Fairfield University’s Dolan School of Business, Penn State University’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the University of Connecticut’s School of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Jenkins is also deeply engaged in community service. He serves as chair of the City of Rye Finance Committee and was previously a board member of the American Red Cross Metro NY North, where he contributed to strengthening resilience and emergency preparedness across the region.

Jenkins succeeds Joseph Gantz, who retired as chair earlier this month after nearly 25 years of service on the Board of Trustees. Appointed chair in 2020, Gantz provided steady, visionary leadership during a time of growth and change for ��ԭ��, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to university.

“This recognition from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences affirms the strength of our curriculum, our commitment to student success, and the excellence of our practitioner-scholar faculty who blend academic rigor with real-world experience,” said Dr. Stuart Sidle, dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at ��ԭ��.

actively engage with CRN schools through recruitment initiatives such as campus visits and college fairs while eliminating barriers to the application process by offering fee waivers and holistic admissions reviews. The university also commits to providing competitive financial aid that meets a significant portion of students’ demonstrated need, as well as access to pre-college programs and on-campus support networks that enhance inclusion and retention. ��ԭ�� will work closely with CRN to facilitate mentorship opportunities and strengthen communication between its admissions and alumni support teams, ensuring seamless transitions from high school through college completion.

Similarly, Cristo Rey Network will encourage its students to explore and apply to ��ԭ�� while maintaining open collaboration to support their college journey. CRN will provide essential guidance on financial aid processes, track student participation in pre-college programs and maintain check-ins with alumni enrolled at ��ԭ��. Additionally, CRN will foster professional development for university staff and counselors through events such as the Annual Summit on College Success, webinars, and networking opportunities, ensuring best practices in supporting first-generation and low-income college students.

Cristo Rey alumni currently enrolled at ��ԭ�� have already seen the benefits of this collaboration firsthand.

“Cristo Rey definitely prepared me for college,” said Johan Lopez, a ��ԭ�� junior. “They were like a beacon. The transition between the two was seamless. I am proud to be a student at ��ԭ��. I am doing well. I know my professors. This partnership is great to see.”

“It was a smooth transition because of all the support I got,” said Miranda Tirado, a ��ԭ�� freshman. “I really like it at ��ԭ��.”

“Cristo Rey encouraged me and always pushed me to be better,” said Rosmariel Gil, a ��ԭ�� freshman. “They never gave up on me. At ��ԭ��, I felt very prepared, did not feel I was behind, but prepped for all of my college classes. The support at ��ԭ�� has been great. I feel at home here.”

“Cristo Rey guided me and taught me never to give up,” added Bryan Dominique, a ��ԭ�� sophomore. “They allowed me to pick a college that aligned with my passion for computer science and be able to finish earlier and with a master’s degree. As a first-generation college student, I want to make my family proud, I want to make myself proud. The support at ��ԭ�� has been great. My mentor is always checking up on me.”

These personal experiences exemplify the goals of partnership providing Cristo Rey students not just with access to higher education, but a solid foundation to succeed.

��ԭ�� kicks off its 25th Annual International Film Festival tonight, bringing acclaimed international films and thought-provoking post-screening discussions to its Westchester Campus from April 22–25. The screenings will take place each evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall at 555 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry, New York. Admission is free and open to the public.

The festival, hosted by the School of Liberal Arts, showcases powerful storytelling from around the world, paired with insightful commentary from distinguished guest speakers.

“The International Film Festival is a big highlight of the School of Liberal Arts calendar every spring, bringing together the ��ԭ�� community with film lovers from across our region,” said Peter West, dean of the School of Liberal Arts at ��ԭ��. “I am grateful to Steven DeRosa and the Festival committee for putting together such a wonderful slate of films and speakers once again this year. ��ԭ�� proudly celebrated the 44th Annual Trustees’ Scholarship Gala, bringing together hundreds of community members for an inspiring evening dedicated to advancing the university’s mission of transforming lives through education. The gala, a signature fundraising event for student scholarships, drew more than 250 attendees and raised over $400,000 to directly benefit ��ԭ�� students.

Held at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, the event welcomed trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni from both ��ԭ�� and the College of New Rochelle (CNR), community partners, and local leaders, all united in support of higher education access and equity.

“This evening is a testament to what we can achieve when we invest in opportunity,” said Joe Gantz, chairman of ��ԭ��’s Board of Trustees. “For 75 years, our Board has guided ��ԭ�� through times of transformation, always rooted in the belief that education changes lives. Scholarships open doors that may otherwise remain closed, and tonight we celebrate that spirit of generosity.”

The evening honored several distinguished individuals who exemplify the values of ��ԭ�� and its deep commitment to community and student success. This year’s honorees included:

Robert (1930–2001), H.D. ’79, and Mary Joyce McCooey – Lifetime Achievement Award
The Honorable Mary E. Sommer (Ret.), CNR SAS ’71 – CNR Legacy Award
Tashauna Wynter ’25 – Student Achievement Award

Vice President of Student Affairs Kevin Joyce served as master of ceremonies, opening the evening with a personal reflection and story about his journey at ��ԭ��. “Years ago, Bob McCooey introduced me to ��ԭ��,” he shared. “So it’s fitting that we honor him and his family tonight.” That sentiment set the tone for a night full of heartfelt reflections and inspirational moments.

One of the night’s most emotional highlights came with the presentation of the Student Achievement Award to senior health sciences major Tashauna Wynter ’25, a ��ԭ�� Scholar and leader on campus. Introduced by last year’s recipient Devin Goens ’24, Wynter was praised as a “role model, student leader, advocate, and academic weapon.”

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Wynter reflected on the transformative role scholarships have played in her journey:

“This moment is truly a dream come true—one that has been on my bucket list since I attended my first Trustees’ Gala as a freshman. Standing here today is a testament to perseverance, faith, and the unwavering support of my ��ԭ�� family,” she said.
“To those in this room who support ��ԭ��’s scholarship funds—thank you. You are changing lives, opening doors, and creating a ripple effect that will be felt for generations.”

Wynter shared her excitement for the future, announcing she will begin ��ԭ��’s Physician Assistant Program in June. Her goal: to become a PA in women’s health and give back to the communities that have supported her.

��ԭ�� President Dr. Susan L. Parish took the stage to congratulate Wynter and highlighted the importance of ��ԭ��’s student-centered philosophy and philanthropy.

“For 75 years ��ԭ�� has been a beacon of opportunity, shaping lives, strengthening communities, and empowering students to achieve their dreams. As we reflect on this remarkable journey, students remain at the heart of our mission. They inspire us just like Tashauna did tonight in absolutely everything we do. When we invest in them, we invest in a brighter future for our communities and our country,” said Parish.

The evening featured powerful video testimonials from students whose educational paths were made possible by donor-supported scholarships, reinforcing the impact of every dollar raised.

In a moving tribute, Joyce introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award honoring Robert and Mary Joyce McCooey. “Our next honoree holds a special place in my heart...The McCooey family.”

A touching video tribute featured Mary and their son Bob, Jr., highlighting Bob Sr.’s enduring legacy.

“For dad, ��ԭ�� was in his DNA,” said Bob, Jr. “He talked about ��ԭ�� all the time.”

Mary added, “Bob was totally consumed in service. He just loved helping. ��ԭ�� was special to Bob, so I am thrilled to be a part of ��ԭ��.”

Mary and her son Bob, Jr. accepted the award and he added: “On behalf of the McCooey family, I’d like to say thank you for recognizing my dad and my mom. Thank you for remembering and recognizing my dad all these years later and what he did for the university.”

In a surprise announcement, Joyce introduced the Robert H. and Mary Joyce McCooey Family Endowed Scholarship, a new fund that will carry the McCooey legacy forward by supporting generations of ��ԭ�� students to come.

The CNR Legacy Award was then presented to the Honorable Mary E. Sommer, retired judge and proud alumna of the College of New Rochelle’s School of Arts and Sciences, Class of 1971. Introduced by CNR alumna and ��ԭ�� trustee Marlene Tutera CNR SAS '71, Sommer was recognized for her decades of service in education and the public sector.

“She is an extraordinary human being who understands education and I am so proud she is the recipient of the CNR Legacy Award,” said Tutera.

In her video message, Sommer said, “Both ��ԭ�� and College of New Rochelle share a deep commitment to the value of service as expressed in both of their mottos Inserviendo Consumere (consumed in service) and that is deeply enriched by the College of New Rochelle’s motto, which is Serviam (I will serve.) Together these two mottos form an inspiration and a foundation for all of us to continue in service. This award is very special to me, but more importantly a recognition to all of us tonight that we are all joined by a shared commitment to service.”

The gala concluded with a special video previewing ��ԭ��’s 75th Anniversary celebrations set to launch in fall 2025—a nod to its rich history and a celebration of its continued evolution.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced that it has joined JED Campus in support of student well-being and mental health. The program is a nationwide initiative of The Jed Foundation (JED) designed to help schools evaluate and strengthen their mental health, substance misuse, and suicide prevention programs and systems to ensure that schools have the strongest possible mental health safety nets. Currently, nearly 500 campuses are engaged in the JED Campus program, reaching more than six million students in 44 states, and the District of Columbia.

“At ��ԭ��, we are deeply committed to fostering a campus environment where every student feels supported in their mental health and well-being,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “By partnering with The Jed Foundation, we are taking a proactive and strategic approach to ensuring that our students have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Mental health is essential to academic success, and this collaboration is an important step in strengthening our efforts to create a healthier, more resilient campus community.”

“The college years are the age when many mental health issues first manifest, and it can be a time of significant stress and pressure,” said John MacPhee, Chief Executive Officer of JED. “JED Campus helps schools by working with them to evaluate what their college or university is doing to support student emotional health and well-being and find practical ways to augment these efforts in a comprehensive way. We believe that the implementation of a campus-wide approach to mental health will lead to safer, healthier communities, and likely greater student retention.”

By joining JED Campus, ��ԭ�� demonstrates a commitment to the emotional well-being of its students. JED Campuses embark on a multi-year strategic collaboration that not only assesses and enhances the work that is already being done but also helps create positive, lasting, systemic changes in the campus community. The program provides schools with a framework for supporting student mental health, as well as assessment tools, feedback reports, a strategic plan, and ongoing support from the JED Higher Education team.

��ԭ��’s membership in JED Campus begins with establishing an interdisciplinary, campus-wide team to assess, support and implement program, policy, and system improvements and completing a confidential, self-assessment survey on its mental health promotion, substance use, and suicide prevention efforts. Upon completion of the assessment, JED subject matter experts provide schools with a comprehensive feedback report identifying successes and opportunities for enhancements. Over the course of four years, ��ԭ�� will collaborate with JED to help implement enhancements. All self-assessment responses and feedback reports are confidential.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced the appointment of Joseph Del Toro as its new chief financial officer. Del Toro is an accomplished financial leader with over 25 years of experience in financial leadership, strategic planning and operational management, making him a valuable addition to the University’s leadership team. In his role as CFO, he will oversee the university’s financial strategy, budgeting and long-term fiscal sustainability.

“We are thrilled to welcome Joe Del Toro as our new Chief Financial Officer,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “His expertise will be instrumental in guiding our financial future and ensuring we can continue to advance our mission of providing a high-quality education for our students.”

“I am eager to bring my skills and passion to ��ԭ��, where I look forward to driving sustainable growth and advancing the organization's mission,” said new ��ԭ�� CFO Joseph Del Toro.

Prior to joining ��ԭ��, Del Toro served as partner and CFO at Argand Partners, a middle-market private equity firm where he advised portfolio company CFOs and oversaw the financial operations of the firm and the funds it managed. Previously, he was CFO at The Topps Company, Undertone and Novitex Enterprise Solutions, where he professionalized operations, restructured financial processes and prepared companies for successful acquisition. He holds a degree in Mathematics from Columbia University and an MBA from Harvard.

Del Toro is deeply passionate about and inspired by ��ԭ��’s mission. As the son of Cuban immigrants and someone who participated in mentorship programs in college, he firmly believes education is a lever for equity and opportunity. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous volunteer organizations and non-profit boards. Most recently, he joined the Board of Directors of Latino U College Access, a non-profit that empowers high achieving, low-income youth on their journeys to and through college so that they may reach their potential.

Dr. Greenwood, who has been serving as interim provost and vice president of academic affairs at ��ԭ�� since July 22, 2024, brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to academic excellence.

“I have had the opportunity to work a great deal with Dr. Greenwood this academic year and it is clear she is a strong supporter of faculty and committed to ��ԭ��,” said Amanda Gunning, Ph.D., professor of Science Education and president of the Faculty Senate at ��ԭ��. “I look forward to continuing our work together.”

Prior to her tenure at ��ԭ��, Dr. Greenwood held academic leadership positions at Northeastern University and the New England Institute of Technology. With over a decade of experience in higher education administration, she has played a pivotal role in developing interprofessional health education programs, securing accreditations across multiple disciplines and expanding learning opportunities through new program modalities and locations. Dr. Greenwood is forward thinking relative to critical concerns faced by educational stakeholders—including student success, career advancement and higher education sustainability.

Beyond her administrative achievements, Dr. Greenwood has had a distinguished career as a physical therapist and professor of physical therapy and is a fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP). Her contributions to the field have earned her numerous awards and recognition. She is deeply committed to fostering strong partnerships between faculty and administration and looks forward to working collaboratively to advance ��ԭ��’s mission.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced its 44th Annual Trustees’ Scholarship Gala, an evening dedicated to celebrating the transformative power of higher education. The gala will honor distinguished individuals whose contributions have left an indelible impact on the university and the broader community, while also engaging the university’s loyal and generous supporters in the mission of educating future generations. The Trustees’ Gala, which raises critical funds to benefit student scholarships, will take place on Wednesday, April 9th at 5:30 p.m. at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, NY.

“The Trustees’ Scholarship Gala is a testament to the power of education and the incredible impact that individuals can have on shaping future generations,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “We are honored to celebrate this year’s remarkable honorees, whose dedication and leadership have strengthened our university and community.”

This year, ��ԭ�� is honored to recognize the following individuals for their outstanding contributions:

Robert (1930-2001), H.D. ’79 and Mary Joyce McCooey – Lifetime Achievement Award

Robert (Bob) McCooey played a pivotal role in ��ԭ��’s history. Joining the Board of Trustees in 1967 as one of its first lay members, he became Board Chair in 1970, guiding the university through a transformative decade. Under his leadership, ��ԭ��’s enrollment surged from 750 to 11,000 students, making it the largest higher education institution in Westchester County. His dedication to providing quality, affordable education led to significant curriculum expansions, faculty enhancements, and library improvements. In recognition of his contributions, ��ԭ�� awarded him an honorary degree in 1979.

Beyond ��ԭ��, Bob’s philanthropic work extended to The College of New Rochelle (CNR), where her served on the Board of Trustees, as well as Lincoln Hall, the New York Foundling Hospital, Iona Preparatory School, Catholic Big Brothers, the Boy Scouts of America, and many other organizations.

His wife, Mary Joyce McCooey, was a dedicated volunteer and community leader, serving on numerous boards, including the Order of Malta, the Sisters of Life, the Inner City Scholarship Fund of New York, Iona Preparatory School, the College of Mount St. Vincent, and other organizations. Bob passed away in 2001, but the McCooey family’s legacy of service and generosity continues to benefit ��ԭ�� and the broader community.

The Honorable Mary E. Sommer (ret.) CNR SAS ’71 – CNR Legacy Award

Mary E. Sommer, a distinguished alumna of The College of New Rochelle, has dedicated her career to public service and law. Graduating magna cum laude in 1971 with a degree in political science, she earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame in 1975. Sommer’s legal career spanned decades, including serving as Corporation Counsel for the City of Stamford, co-founding a prominent law firm, and being appointed as a Connecticut Superior Court judge in 2008. Her tenure on the bench included leadership roles in juvenile justice, racial equity, and immigration services.

A dedicated advocate for education and community service, her extensive nonprofit work includes serving on the board of the Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut and leadership roles with Hope for Haiti, Building One Community, and the Ferguson Library Foundation, embodying CNR’s motto, Serviam—"I will serve."

Sommer also served as a member of CNR’s Board of Trustees from 2016 until CNR’s closure in 2019, where she played an instrumental role in ��ԭ��’s teach out of CNR students and its adopting of the CNR alumni community. Sommer’s commitment and dedication to CNR have ensured its legacy lives on at ��ԭ��.

Tashauna Wynter ’25 – Student Achievement Award

Tashauna Wynter, a senior health sciences major on the pre-physician assistant track, is an exemplary student leader at ��ԭ��. A member of the ��ԭ�� Scholars Program, she actively contributes to campus life as a resident assistant, president of the Black Student Union, and manager of the Prestigious Divas performance organization. Her commitment to service extends beyond campus, with volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore and as a Bridge Coach for Bronx high school students.

Born and raised in Jamaica, Wynter is a first-generation college student who values the importance of education and community service. Her dedication to supporting underserved communities aligns with her aspirations of becoming a healthcare provider, making her a deserving recipient of this year’s Student Achievement Award.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced its recognition by U.S. News & World Report as a top performer for Social Mobility in its 2025 Best Colleges rankings. This marks the fourth consecutive year that ��ԭ�� has achieved this distinction, solidifying its commitment to providing accessible education for all students. Additionally, the University secured rankings for Best Undergraduate Nursing Program and Best Regional University.

“��ԭ�� is dedicated to empowering our students through education, especially those who face barriers to higher education,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of ��ԭ��. “Being recognized for our efforts in social mobility underscores our mission to transform lives and communities. We are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed.”

Now in its 40th year, the U.S. News rankings assess nearly 1,500 colleges and universities based on a range of academic quality measures, emphasizing social mobility and outcomes for graduating college students. ��ԭ�� ranked in the top 13% of schools in the northern region for Social Mobility, which measures the graduation rates of students receiving federal Pell Grants. ��ԭ�� has earned a spot in the Social Mobility category since its addition to the Best College Rankings in 2019. This year, ��ԭ�� improved its ranking, moving up to 20th out of 165 institutions, a significant leap from 28th place last year. This distinction shows ��ԭ��’s commitment to ensure educational access and college completion for non-traditional students, including those who may be demographically underrepresented in higher education, demonstrate high financial need, or identify as first-generation college students.

��ԭ�� stands as the largest private minority-serving institution and Hispanic-Serving Institution in the region, reflecting its long-standing commitment to educational access, and has one of the lowest tuition rates of private, four-year colleges in the region. In 2023-24, 54% of ��ԭ�� students qualified for Federal Pell Grants. This year, over 70% of new freshmen were eligible for Pell Grants, further supporting their educational journey.

In addition to its Social Mobility recognition, ��ԭ��’s School of Nursing ranked in the top 57% among Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs nationally, reinforcing its dedication to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals. This ranking, which rose significantly from 535 to 392, reflects ��ԭ��’s commitment to excellence in nursing education and responsiveness to workforce needs.

For the fifth consecutive year, ��ԭ�� ranked in the Best Regional Universities North category. In this category, regional universities are ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence. ��ԭ�� ranked 115 out of 165 (up from 123 last year), placing in the top 70%. This improvement demonstrates the University’s focus on enhancing academic initiatives and student outcomes while increasing its visibility both regionally and nationally.

��ԭ�� joins over 100 colleges and universities to connect more students to postsecondary opportunities.

Today, ��ԭ�� announced its continued participation in Common App’s direct admissions program for the third consecutive year to connect more low-income students and first-generation college students with postsecondary opportunities. ��ԭ�� joins over 100 colleges and universities nationwide in a program that provides over 200,000 first-generation and low and middle-income students interested in attending college. By partnering with Common App, ��ԭ�� aims to further its mission of broadening educational opportunities for both traditional and nontraditional students.

“��ԭ��’s ongoing participation underscores its commitment to making higher education accessible and equitable,” said Anne Gilligan, assistant vice president for admissions and recruitment at ��ԭ��. “By leveraging Common App’s direct admissions program, ��ԭ�� can continue to play a crucial role in supporting students who may face barriers to higher education, ensuring that more individuals can achieve their academic and professional goals.”

��ԭ��’s partnership with Common App has proven to be successful. This fall, 220 direct admissions applicants enrolled at ��ԭ�� making up just over 20% of the freshman class and representing a huge increase over the 29 enrolled last year.

“We are excited for ��ԭ�� to join our direct admissions program, where even more students will now know that they are worthy and wanted on a college campus,” said Jenny Rickard, president & CEO of Common App. “Overall, direct admissions is about changing the narrative of a college education from one of scarcity to one of opportunity, by ensuring students know that they are worthy and welcome on a college campus.”

Common App has piloted a direct admissions program since 2021, offering admission to students who created a Common App account and provided enough academic information– but had not yet completed all–of their open applications. The organization launched its full-scale program last year, offering over 400,000 first-generation and low-income students direct admissions from 71 colleges and universities. Results showed that 3 out of 4 students who added a school to their college list upon receiving a direct admission offer applied to that school.

“Common App Direct Admissions allows ��ԭ�� to connect with potential applicants who may have thought college was out of their reach,” said Krystal Trama, director, Student Services Support Center for ��ԭ��. “This connection continues spreading our mission and making college attainable for everyone.”
