À±½·Ô´´â€™s student literary magazine “Red Hyacinth: A Journal of Writing and Art†has received the highest distinction in the 2025 Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest, marking the second consecutive year the publication has earned a “First Class†rating. The student-produced publication, which features original writing and artwork, was selected from hundreds of entries submitted by schools across the United States and abroad.

“’First Class’ is the highest distinction awarded,†said Kristen Keckler, associate professor of English, chair of Literature and Language and faculty advisor for the magazine. “This is the third consecutive year I have entered ‘Red Hyacinth’ into the REALM contest. In 2023, we were ranked as ‘Excellent.’ For our 2024 issue, we moved up two notches to ‘First Class,’ a ranking we maintained with the most recent 2025 issue.â€

The REALM program, organized by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), recognizes excellent literary magazines produced by students with faculty guidance. The program aims to encourage schools to develop publications that celebrate the art and craft of writing. Schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada and American schools abroad are eligible to participate.

In 2025, 456 student magazines were nominated by schools in 44 states, Washington, D.C. and six countries. Magazines from middle school, high school and institutions of higher education were considered. Of those entries, only 135 magazines were awarded the contest’s highest ‘First Class’ distinction.

“This recognition reflects the hard work of our student editors as well as the quality of creative work produced by students across the university,†added Keckler.

For more information about the REALM Program, please visit: https://ncte.org/awards/program-to-recognize-in-student-literary-magazines/.

À±½·Ô´´ student Goebbels Bien Aime (Computer Information Systems) and Westchester Community College student Diego Patino (Cybersecurity) earned Best Undergraduate Poster honors at the 2025 AISES National Conference, held October 2–4 in Minneapolis. Their research project, “STEM Success Starts with Student Voices,†was selected as the top undergraduate presentation among 65 student research papers from across the country.

Each student received a $100 award and a commemorative AISES Indigenous Research Scholar coin in recognition of their achievement. Their travel and participation were supported by STEM Ready, a U.S. Department of Education Title III grant designed to strengthen retention and success among STEM students.

The award-winning poster originated in the Summer Research Institute (SRI)—a five-week, STEM Ready–funded program that pairs À±½·Ô´´ and Westchester Community College students with faculty and peer mentors to conduct intensive, collaborative research.

Through the Summer Research Institute, students receive stipends and hands-on research experience in fields such as biology, psychology, mathematics, computer science, cybersecurity, and computer information systems—empowering the next generation of STEM leaders to turn classroom learning into real-world impact.

Guided by faculty mentor Dr. Pauline McClung Mosley, the student team, Bien Aime and Patino’s team, which included Oscar Hernandez and Alvaro Freddy Sanca, applied the triangulation method to study how mentorship, inclusion, and hands-on learning help students find their voices in STEM.

“What makes the Summer Research Institute especially meaningful is seeing students continue their work beyond the summer—presenting at conferences and earning national recognition,†said Dr. Stuart Sidle, psychology professor and special advisor to the Provost, who serves as the principal investigator for the STEM ready Grant. “Bien Aime and Patino are two perfect examples. Their success is a testament to their dedication, collaboration, and the outstanding mentorship of Dr. McClung Mosley.â€

For Bien Aime, the experience marked both a professional milestone and a personal breakthrough.

“It was our first time attending a conference, and we had no idea what to expect,†said Bien Aime. “Being selected as one of the top undergraduate posters made me realize that all the hard work we put into the SRI paid off. This isn’t just a steppingstone—it’s a major achievement in my STEM journey.â€

He credited the STEM Ready program and the SRI with broadening her perspective on the field.

“Before participating, I hadn’t given much thought to who is underrepresented in STEM,†he explained. “The program helped me think outside the box and develop confidence to present our research publicly. When it came time to present at AISES, I was nervous—but my partner reminded me, We did the research. We know what we’re talking about.’ That reassurance helped me stay grounded.â€

For Patino, the recognition was both humbling and inspiring.

“It feels absolutely surreal,†he said. “We went to the conference hoping to share our findings and learn from others. Hearing our names called as one of the top posters was an incredible surprise. As someone from an underrepresented background, this project was deeply personal—I identified with the idea of finding your ‘STEM voice.’â€

He noted that their presentation sparked interest from educators and researchers nationwide.

“Several professors and doctors told us they were inspired by our mentorship-based learning model and wanted to read our future publication,†he added. “That moment made me realize our research could make a real impact on how STEM is taught and experienced.â€

Both students credited the STEM Ready program with giving them the mentorship, collaboration and presentation skills that prepared them for success on the national stage.

Learn more about STEM Ready at www.mercy.edu/stemready.

À±½·Ô´´ students delivered a standout performance in the National Cyber League (NCL) Spring 2025 Competition, finishing 25th nationally in the Cyber Power Rankings out of over 9,200 competitors from 510 colleges and universities across the country.

Coached by Adjunct Instructor Carlos Sanchez from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, À±½·Ô´´ students competed in both individual and team events that challenged their cybersecurity skills through real-world scenarios. The NCL, powered by Cyber Skyline, is widely regarded as a premier platform for training future cybersecurity professionals, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and career readiness.

“Our team delivered an exceptional performance after a highly competitive and intense few days,†said Sanchez. “Their hard work and commitment truly paid off.â€

The À±½·Ô´´ team, composed of Jack Kowalski, Kevin Merino, Wensael Jean Marie, Justin Sullivan, Josiah Silverberg, Alexis Severo, and Keith P. Paris, made notable strides throughout the competition.

Jack Kowalski soared in the individual competition, jumping from 125th to 50th place, landing in the 99th percentile of all participants nationwide.

Kevin Merino, competing in his first NCL season, made a strong debut by placing in the 88th percentile, showing great potential for future competitions.

In the team-based competion, À±½·Ô´´â€™s team made a significant leap in the rankings, climbing from 236th to 47th place in just one semester. The improvement reflects the team’s tireless preparation, including round-the-clock access to university labs and collaborative training sessions.

“This leap reflects the impact of their dedication, including intensive training and collaboration,†Sanchez noted. “With 24/7 lab access, the team worked tirelessly.â€

The team's outstanding performance drew formal recognition from NCL Commissioner Dr. David Zeichick, who praised both the students and their coach.

“Their collaborative effort and dedication to the NCL Competition is worthy of praise and recognition,†Zeichick wrote in a letter to À±½·Ô´´. “We highly recommend that students from À±½·Ô´´ be recognized for their admirable achievement… and that Adjunct Instructor Carlos Sanchez be acknowledged for their dedication, support, and encouragement.â€

Participants in the NCL not only compete for rankings but also receive detailed skills reports that validate their capabilities to future employers—an important asset as cybersecurity remains one of the fastest-growing fields in the job market.

À±½·Ô´´â€™s performance in the NCL underscores its commitment to hands-on learning, academic excellence and career preparation in the rapidly evolving world of cybersecurity.

Main Content

The À±½·Ô´´ community tuned in on April 15 for a thought-provoking discussion about artificial intelligence (AI). The À±½·Ô´´ School of Liberal Arts (SLA) presented an event titled “Your Future with AI: Roundtable Discussion with Industry Leaders,†featuring experts who discussed AI’s opportunities, risks and ethical considerations. The panel discussion drew a large audience of approximately 75 attendees who asked thoughtful questions and continued the discussion in the chat. Events like this one empower À±½·Ô´´ students and faculty with insights and perspectives that will help them navigate their education and careers.

The panel consisted of three leaders working at the forefront of AI innovation: Scott Bounds, senior director of Azure Data and AI at Microsoft; Dustin Rainey, senior director of strategy and innovation at consumer data company Acxiom; and Jason Snyder, global chief AI officer at experiential marketing agency Momentum Worldwide. Moderators Damien Germino, associate dean of operations for the À±½·Ô´´ School of Nursing and adjunct faculty, and Jade Snyder, assistant professor of communication arts, guided the conversation.

After sharing examples of how their companies are currently using AI, the panelists discussed how various industries are beginning to integrate AI to increase productivity and improve outcomes. In healthcare, for example, some clinicians are using AI to help them see patterns in data and make better decisions. The panelists agreed that people should own their own health data, though sharing that data may help researchers find cures or treatments for diseases. AI has the power to democratize healthcare, but the panelists raised concerns about the business model and the risk of AI being used as a premium service, potentially leaving the underserved without access.

AI is impacting the job market already, especially hiring processes. With the help of AI, it is easier than ever to put together a résumé. However, AI is also making decisions about job applications before human hiring managers ever see them. Snyder recommended that students looking for jobs clean up their digital presence but preserve their unique voice, which is what makes them human.

The importance of consent came up several times. Bounds mentioned that people generally accept that their data is being shared but still want to be able to protect themselves. Snyder went a step further by emphasizing that consent is broken and must evolve. “We need systems that respect everyone’s agency from the beginning,†he said. “In the end, this isn’t just about legal compliance. It’s about designing a future where people matter more than the machines that they’re training.â€

The panelists advised faculty to let students use AI and learn alongside them. Snyder encouraged faculty to help students interrogate AI, asking where its answers came from and what assumptions it made. Rainey also suggested that students try new tools like Lovable that use AI to enable non-engineers to build websites and apps.

Rainey likened the present to the Industrial Revolution when technology disrupted traditional methods of working. “If the task is to plow a field, I'd much rather have a tractor than a shovel,†he said. “We have to think about AI in that sense. You need to start retraining yourself to learn this new tool.â€

The panelists are all self-professed “AI optimists,†though they do express some concerns. Bounds, for example, worries that people may come to rely on AI too much. “My biggest concern is the skills that people aren't getting,†he said. “Think about all the grunt work you have to do to become a partner in a law firm. If you're not doing that work and instead you're relying on AI, how do you get that elevated position where you have all that understanding and that skillset?â€

As AI continues to advance, Snyder believes that there must be diverse voices in the room to make sure AI is developed and used ethically. “Ethics and fairness are not going to come from hope,†he explained. “They’re going to come from designing governance into the architecture from the start. The only voices shaping AI today are technologists and shareholders. We need to avoid exploitation by building systems where power is not centralized and where people can still say, ‘This far, no farther.’â€

Throughout the discussion, attendees asked thoughtful questions in the chat such as whether data can be used if users did not give consent and the ethical implications of promoting AI as augmenting human thought.

Snyder closed by encouraging everyone to keep speaking up and questioning how AI is being built and regulated: “Are we using AI to serve the person (the user), or are we using the user to serve the system? That's the ethical inflection point that we all need to struggle with. If we don’t get serious about it, it won’t shape what we’re doing but who we become.â€

À±½·Ô´´ kicks off its 25th Annual International Film Festival tonight, bringing acclaimed international films and thought-provoking post-screening discussions to its Westchester Campus from April 22–25. The screenings will take place each evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall at 555 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry, New York. Admission is free and open to the public.

The festival, hosted by the School of Liberal Arts, showcases powerful storytelling from around the world, paired with insightful commentary from distinguished guest speakers.

“The International Film Festival is a big highlight of the School of Liberal Arts calendar every spring, bringing together the À±½·Ô´´ community with film lovers from across our region,†said Peter West, dean of the School of Liberal Arts at À±½·Ô´´. “I am grateful to Steven DeRosa and the Festival committee for putting together such a wonderful slate of films and speakers once again this year. Pass the popcorn!â€

“A lot goes into planning the festival—screening films, committee discussions, and coordinating logistics—but to me, the magic happens in pairing the right speaker with each film,†said Steven DeRosa, festival coordinator and senior lecturer for Cinema Studies at À±½·Ô´´. “The right speaker can ignite fascinating conversations and offer new perspectives that transform each evening into something far more than a night at the movies.â€

Festival Schedule:

Tuesday, April 22 – “Io Capitano†(121 minutes, Italy)

Directed by Matteo Garrone

A Homeric fairy tale that tells the adventurous journey of two young boys, Seydou and Moussa, who leave Dakar to reach Europe.

Drama | Wolof, French (with English subtitles)

Guest Speaker: Boukary Sawadogo, Ph.D

Wednesday, April 23 – “The Perfect Candidate†(104 minutes, Saudi Arabia)

Directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour

A determined young Saudi doctor's surprise run for office in the local city elections sweeps up her family and community as they struggle to accept their town's first female candidate.

Drama | Arabic (with English subtitles)

Guest Speaker: Ayaat Abdelah

Thursday, April 24 – “La Suprema†(83 minutes, Colombia)

Directed by Felipe Holguin

In a remote village without electricity, a teenager convinces the whole town to find a way of watching her estranged uncle compete in a televised world championship boxing match.

Drama | Spanish (with English subtitles)

Guest Speaker: Alan Hartman, Ph.D.

Friday, April 25 – “The Monster†(127 minutes, Japan)

Directed by Hirokazu Koreeda

When her son Minato starts misbehaving, his mother suspects something is wrong.

À±½·Ô´´â€™s student literary magazine, Red Hyacinth: A Journal of Writing & Art, has received the highest honor from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), earning a “First Class†distinction in the 2024 Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) contest. The student-produced publication, which showcases original writing and artwork, was selected from hundreds of entries nationwide.

“In 2023, we were ranked 'Excellent'—that was the first year I entered us into the contest. With the 2024 issue, we jumped up two rankings to 'First Class,' which is the top ranking we could receive,†said Dr. Kristen Keckler, associate professor and department chair of Literature and Language, and faculty advisor for Red Hyacinth. “I'm very proud of my team of student editors as well as the artists and writers we featured in the issue.â€

The REALM program contest, organized by NCTE, publicly recognizes outstanding literary magazines produced by students with the support of their educators. REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to submit their publications for evaluation.

This year, the competition drew schools in 46 states and five countries nominated 422 student magazines. drew 422 entries from institutions in 46 states and five countries. Out of these, only 125 magazines were awarded the contest’s highest distinction, REALM First Class.

“Red Hyacinth is one of the signature cocurricular initiatives in the School of Liberal Arts, offering students the opportunity for hands-on editing and layout work, while also giving our writers and artists the chance to launch into the workforce with publications to their names,†said Peter West, dean of the School of Liberal Arts. “Kristen Keckler has done a brilliant job of building the magazine and leveraging it to help students connect their classroom learning with a range of career-oriented skills. Congrats to Kristen and the Red Hyacinth team!â€

The achievement solidifies Red Hyacinth: A Journal of Writing & Art as a premier student publication, reflecting the talent and dedication of À±½·Ô´´â€™s literary and artistic community.

A research paper co-authored by À±½·Ô´´ assistant professor Dr. Usman Rauf and graduate student Zhiyuan Wei has received the prestigious "Best Paper Award" from the Journal of Cybersecurity and Mobility.

“It was truly an honor to receive the Best Paper Award from one of the emerging cybersecurity journals,†said Dr. Rauf. “As someone from a teaching-intensive institution, this recognition is particularly meaningful, as such accolades are a rare and valued achievement in my academic journey.â€

For Wei, who earned his graduate degree in Cybersecurity from À±½·Ô´´ in 2023, the experience of working on the paper and being recognized for it was invaluable.

“I am proud to see our research recognized by the publisher, validating the hard work and collaboration that went into it,†said Wei. “It was truly an honor to be part of such a study. Contributing to this paper allowed me to deepen my technical expertise and motivated me to continue exploring innovative solutions in the field.â€

Wei is thankful for the guidance and mentorship he received from Dr. Rauf. “His encouragement and expertise supported me during the whole paper writing process and deepened my passion for cybersecurity research on insider threat detection,†he added.

The recognition from the Journal of Cybersecurity and Mobility underscores the paper's significant contribution to the field, further cementing À±½·Ô´´â€™s role in advancing cybersecurity research.

Titled “A Taxonomic Classification of Insider Threats: Existing Techniques, Future Directions & Recommendations," the paper provides a comprehensive Systematization of Knowledge (SoK)-based survey of insider threat detection methods. The research categorizes existing literature in the field and introduces a rigorous evaluation framework to assess the effectiveness of current detection techniques.

Additionally, the paper presents a proof-of-concept analysis, highlighting critical gaps in existing detection strategies. By identifying key shortcomings, the authors propose actionable solutions to enhance insider threat detection, offering valuable insights for future research and cybersecurity practices.

“Our contribution is one of a kind and provides standards for security communities and organizations to design and enhance defense capabilities against insider threats,†said Wei.

À±½·Ô´´ has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support faculty of the School of Liberal Arts in their efforts to reshape general education History survey classes. The $147,610 Humanities Initiatives grant was awarded to Dr. Maureen MacLeod, associate professor and Dr. Caitlin Wiesner, assistant professor, to implement a three-year curricular and faculty development program to reshape general-education history survey classes, creating twenty new thematic global history courses.

"This grant is a step in the right direction for adopting more equity-minded pedagogical practices,†said Dr. MacLeod. “When applying for this grant, Dr. Wiesner and I aimed to find ways to better engage students with a more diverse range of topics that would inspire them to become more active learners.â€

“I am thrilled to partner with Dr. MacLeod in directing ‘Global Horizons: Reimagining and Reinvigorating the History Survey,’†said Dr. Wiesner. “This grant will support our full time and part time faculty as they create exciting new courses that showcase their subject-area expertise and lay a robust foundation in historical methodology for À±½·Ô´´â€™s first- and second-year students.â€

With the NEH grant, Dr. MacLeod and Dr. Wiesner seek to transform the traditional history survey by developing courses that integrate new technology, enhance students’ written communication skills, and explore a wider array of diverse perspectives.

This is the second major NEH grant secured by Dr. MacLeod and the School of Liberal Arts over the past year, the first being the Humanities Connections Grant, which aims to develop a "Scientific Humanities" pathway within General Education through the Humanities to better engage and enhance the experience of science and health majors. This planning grant supports a team of faculty working to map out this pathway and create a series of scientifically minded, humanities-based courses. “Our goal is to inspire science and health majors to find excitement and value in the humanities courses they take as part of their General Education experience," added Dr. MacLeod.

The NEH supports research and learning in history, literature, philosophy, and other areas of the humanities by funding selected, peer-reviewed proposals from around the nation. À±½·Ô´´â€™s program was one of 219 exemplary projects nationwide selected by the NEH to receive a grant. For more information on this most recent grant award, see press release here.

Raising Awareness Through the Power of Film

À±½·Ô´´â€™s 24th Annual International Film Festival celebrates cultural diversity.

This spring, À±½·Ô´´â€™s School of Liberal Arts presented a weeklong series of thought-provoking foreign films at its 24th Annual International Film Festival.

À±½·Ô´´â€™s International Film Festival was established in 1999 to promote foreign language study and foster cultural awareness. Every year, students, faculty and community members come together to view and discuss entertaining and engaging films from across the globe.

“The International Film Festival is a signature event for À±½·Ô´´ and the School of Liberal Arts because it epitomizes our commitment to the arts as well as to our surrounding community,†said Peter West, dean of the School of Liberal Arts. “In addition to introducing audiences to a range of compelling films they might not otherwise have a chance to see, each screening includes a presentation and discussion that invites everyone to explore the themes of each film, ask questions and share their own perspective.â€

This year’s lineup included “Prayers for the Stolen†(Mexico), which received an Ariel Award (the Mexican equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Picture in 2022; “Writing with Fire†(India), which received a Peabody Award for Best Documentary Film in 2023; “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom†(Bhutan), Academy Award nominee for Best International Feature Film in 2022; and “Apples†(Greece), nominated for a Hellenic Film Academy Award (the Greek equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Newcomer in 2021.

“We try to select films that were submitted by countries for consideration for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film as well as films that received recognition at some of the more renowned festivals like Cannes, Sundance, Tribeca and Toronto,†said Steven DeRosa, festival coordinator and associate director for Writing and English at À±½·Ô´´â€™s Center for Academic Excellence and Innovation.

Each of the selected films explored different aspects of the theme of perception, telling stories from different perspectives of resilience and triumph, overcoming societal barriers and oppression, coping with mourning and experiencing a coming-of-age journey.

On May 12, À±½·Ô´´ College held the 2023 Faculty Recognition Ceremony to celebrate faculty members receiving promotions, tenure, and awards. Approximately 100 people attended the event on the Dobbs Ferry Campus.

“The work faculty members do is incredibly important. It is intellectually challenging and multifaceted, requiring skills in teaching, research and service — and often administration too,†said Linda Bastone, Ph.D., associate provost for faculty affairs. We can’t do enough to celebrate the faculty and recognize their work. And of course, their impact on students can’t be overstated,†said Bastone.

The first portion of the ceremony featured 40 faculty poster presentations focused on pedagogy and research. The ceremony began with opening remarks by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Eva Fernández, Ph.D., President Tim Hall and President of the Faculty Senate Matthew Hyland, Ph.D.

“From A to Z, you oversee everything, from gateway programs to experiential education,†Fernández said in compliment to À±½·Ô´´ faculty. “You’re moving forward to mastery and dedicated to the success of our students.â€

Hall’s remarks echoed those of Fernández. “I commend you for your work and wish you every success,†he said.

“You all deserve to be appreciated,†said Hyland, in his address to the faculty. “Thank you for your passion for À±½·Ô´´ College, a very special place.â€

Then, the dean of each school honored faculty members who received promotions and tenure and those retiring. Finally, various administrators presented awards for faculty excellence, innovation and research.

Peter West, Ph.D., dean of À±½·Ô´´â€™s School of Liberal Arts, cited the recognition ceremony as one of his favorite events of the year. “It really is a great time where faculty get to recognize their peers and where they get to be recognized for their full dedication to every aspect of teaching and scholarship.â€

Congratulations to the following faculty for achieving important career milestones and recognitions.

Promoted to professor:

Saliha Bava, Ph.D.

Amanda Gunning, Ph.D.

Nannette Hyland, Ph.D.

Kathleen Kenney-Riley, Ed.D.

JungKang Miller, Ph.D.

David Wang, Ph.D.

Promoted to associate professor:

Ben Abelson, Ph.D.

Dana Horton, Ph.D.

Maureen MacLeod, Ph.D.

Astrid Mel, Ph.D.

Chun Zhou, Ph.D.

Awarded tenure:

Matthew Hyland, Ph.D.

Chun Zhou, Ph.D.

Dana Horton, Ph.D.

Honored at retirement:

Diana D’Amico Juettner, J.D.

Teaching Excellence Award:

Deborah Mumford, Ed.D.

Laura Proszak, Ph.D.

Faculty Innovation Award:

Elise Arnold-Levene, Ph.D.

Faculty Fellow:

Haley Collazo, MS, L.IS, M.A.

Online Teacher of the Year:

Laura Policar, Ed.D.

Outstanding Research Award:

Marc Palmieri, MFA, M.A.

William F.
