              &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;As part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, 辣椒原创鈥檚 School of Nursing hosted a Wellness Day at its Bronx Campus on November 18, 2025, offering students, faculty and staff an opportunity to pause, recharge and focus on self-care amid the demands of academic and professional life.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The event featured a range of holistic and wellness-focused activities, including meditation, yoga, energy healing, reflexology, massage and bodywork, exercise and stretching, painting, drip art and origami. Designed as a space for stress relief and relaxation, the event emphasized the importance of caring for both physical and emotional well-being, particularly within the nursing profession.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Christina Rossi, director of Simulation at the School of Nursing and organizer of the event, said Wellness Day was created to raise awareness about holistic modalities and their role in both personal wellness and patient care.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚 wanted to bring awareness of holistic modalities and stress-relieving techniques to the 辣椒原创 community,鈥 Rossi said. 鈥淔uture nurses can incorporate these approaches not only into patient care, but also into their own self-care.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Drawing on her background as a holistic nurse, Rossi collaborated with practitioners from the Reiki, polarity therapy, yoga, and holistic nursing communities, many of whom volunteered their time. The event included hand and foot reflexology, Reiki, polarity therapy, yoga, art therapy and physical therapy services such as massage, cupping and bodywork.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚 wanted a wide array of services,鈥 she explained. 鈥淚 reached out to different communities I belong to, and people were very willing to come in鈥攅ven if only for a few hours鈥攖o support self-care for our students, faculty and staff.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For Rossi, the importance of self-care is deeply personal. She cited both her own experience working as a nurse and the loss of her mother, who she said spent her life giving to others without prioritizing her own health. 鈥淲e鈥檙e all valuable, and we鈥檙e all meant to be here,鈥 she said. 鈥淭aking care of ourselves is essential.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Among the Wellness Day providers was Constance Korol, a Reiki practitioner and owner of Meta 180, based in Long Island. She offers services including Reiki, reflexology, breathwork, yoga, tai chi and emotional freedom techniques. Korol said Reiki was a natural fit for the event.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淢ost people understand their physical bodies and are beginning to understand emotional and mental health,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut many don鈥檛 think about their energetic body. Reiki can help people move from stress to vitality and live in greater alignment with their whole body.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Faculty and staff attendees praised the university for prioritizing wellness across the campus community. Dr. Valerie Taylor&amp;nbsp;Haslip, associate dean of the School of Nursing, emphasized that health is foundational to all aspects of life.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚f you鈥檙e not healthy, you can鈥檛 function,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 work well, enjoy your family or have a good quality of life. Health is the basis for everything else.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Admissions Counselor Crystal Alvarado echoed that sentiment, calling the event a meaningful reminder to slow down. 鈥淓ven if it鈥檚 just five minutes, taking a breather to prioritize your mental and physical health is crucial,鈥 she said. 鈥淎 lot of people overlook their health because they鈥檙e so busy.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Liza Tuck, a PACT mentor, said the event offered an important reminder for those who are constantly giving to others. 鈥淪ometimes you just need a nudge,鈥 she said. 鈥淏eing cared for helps release stress and builds awareness that you need to take care of yourself, too.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Admissions Counselor Ramouna Charleton added that hosting the event during the workday sent a powerful message. 鈥淚t shows that the university cares about our well-being,鈥 she said. 鈥淭aking time while we鈥檙e here on campus means a lot.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As 辣椒原创 marks 75 years, Wellness Day served as both a celebration and a reaffirmation of its commitment to the health and well-being of its community鈥攗nderscoring that caring for others begins with caring for oneself.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;figure&gt;

              &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;A dozen 辣椒原创 nursing students spent part of their summer bringing vital healthcare services to rural communities in Guatemala鈥攁n experience they say reshaped their understanding of nursing, global health and compassion. The group, made up of six students from the Westchester Campus and six from the Bronx Campus, traveled alongside Assistant Professor Lauren Ibiezugbe and Nursing Instructor Peter Shute for a weeklong community health immersion. The trip counted towards clinical hours for the students, as well.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The trip was organized in partnership with Nursing Heart, a Guatemala-based nonprofit that provides medical screenings, health education and community support. The collaboration was made possible through Susan 鈥淪ue鈥 Milne, CNR SAS '75, MSN, JD, a CNR alumna and retired nurse who has volunteered with Nursing Heart for over a decade.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Participants discussed their experience during a presentation hosted by the School of Nursing in the Westchester Campus on October 15, 2025.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Assistant Professor Ibiezugbe said the experience offered students a rare look at global community health in action.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淲e partnered with Nursing Heart to help provide basic health screenings and community healthcare,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e met with traditional midwives, heard incredible stories about their experiences and visited a women鈥檚 cooperative in a community deeply affected by domestic violence and poverty. These women found a way to break the cycle for their families.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Students conducted community health home visits, where they navigated long distances and rugged terrain to reach families.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Amber Mejia, a senior, said the home visits were eye-opening. 鈥淲hen we did the home visits, I realized how hard it was to get to the homes. Everywhere was so far. I appreciated their trust in us. They were so welcoming.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;At local school clinics, students provided health screenings, nutrition education and hygiene lessons.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚t was such an honor to go on this trip,鈥 said Ricardo Najera, an accelerated nursing student in his third semester. 鈥淲e talked to kids about healthy habits like brushing their teeth. They were so receptive. We helped over 120 children. I鈥檓 very proud of the work we did. I鈥檓 from Guatemala, and I hope more people get to experience my country and its people.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The group also visited a nursing home, offering care both to residents and their caregivers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淲e were able to do health assessments, massage their feet and just spend time with them,鈥 said senior Alexis Jefferson. 鈥淪eeing the smiles on their faces reminded me what nursing is all about. Care goes so far. This trip reminded me why I chose nursing.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For senior Joseph Armas, the trip highlighted the challenges of healthcare access. He said he was struck by 鈥渢he lack of clinics, pharmacies, paved roads, and transportation,鈥 noting how these barriers shape health outcomes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Fahrija Kamal, an accelerated nursing student in her third semester, said the experience renewed her sense of purpose. 鈥淚 saw people struggle with food access and daily adversity. As a group, we learned to help each other as well as others. I relearned compassion and kindness.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Instructor Shute praised the students鈥 dedication: 鈥淲e are so proud of our students. They worked so hard. We wanted them to learn about community health and how they can bring these lessons back into their work and studies.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How the Partnership Came to Be&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The connection to Nursing Heart began with Milne, who had read about 辣椒原创鈥檚 commitment to global community work. Wanting to help expand those opportunities, she reached out to the university鈥檚 alumni office.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Milne, who served on Nursing Heart鈥檚 Board of Trustees, has been involved with the organization since 2013. She and her husband made repeated volunteer trips to Guatemala, assisting with wellness clinics and school health visits.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淢y husband and I met the person who ran Nursing Heart and wanted to contribute to their mission,鈥 Milne said. 鈥淲e saw firsthand the resilience and gratitude of the people there.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When she learned 辣椒原创 hoped to expand global health experiences, she connected Assistant Professor Ibiezugbe with Nursing Heart鈥檚 leadership.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ibiezugbe, who is developing a Global Health program for nursing students, said the partnership aligns perfectly with her goals. 鈥淲e hope these trips can count toward community health clinical hours, with plans to expand to other courses and even the graduate program,鈥 she said.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The relationship has already proved fruitful. Nursing Heart鈥檚 executive director praised the students鈥 skills and compassion, and Milne expressed joy at hearing how meaningful the trip was for everyone involved.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As 辣椒原创 builds out its Global Health initiative, faculty hope to make trips like this a recurring part of the nursing curriculum.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;figure&gt;

&lt;/style&gt;&lt;div class="parallax-1"&gt;&lt;div class="parallax-text"&gt;&lt;h1&gt;All the World's a Stage&lt;/h1&gt;&lt;h2&gt;辣椒原创 students gain hands-on experience working and performing at local theater.&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="content"&gt;&lt;p class="intro-message"&gt;Thanks to a partnership between 辣椒原创鈥檚 School of Liberal Arts and the Irvington Theater, 辣椒原创 students can take advantage of internships, part-time jobs and performance opportunities at the local theater 鈥 contributing to the community in the process.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="copy-col"&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淭his job gives me an 鈥榠n鈥 in the arts,鈥 said alumnus Eduardo Balbuena 鈥23 who works part-time at the theater. 鈥淚t complements what I want to do career-wise, and I hope it鈥檒l help me get there one day.鈥 He plans to pursue a career in acting. He fell in love with the craft at 辣椒原创 while majoring in radio and television production.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="margin:0;"&gt;&lt;img style="float:left;height:auto;margin-bottom:1rem;margin-right:2rem;width:50%;" alt="Theater Club rehearsal" src="/sites/default/files/2025-04/irv-theater-it-club-rehearsal-18_cmyk_rt_1.jpg"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Marc Palmieri, assistant professor in communications arts, spearheaded the partnership with Irvington Theater manager Greg Allen. The 432-seat Irvington Theater, which is located within Irvington鈥檚 Town Hall, opened in 1902 and now hosts local arts organizations and touring groups. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the ideal community organization collaboration in every way,鈥 Palmieri said. 鈥淭he theater is up the street from 辣椒原创, and it鈥檚 such a beautiful place. The people there are so encouraging for the students. And it couldn鈥檛 be a better extension of my classes because students see all the elements of a theatrical production come together on a professional level, and they get to be a part of it.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In 2017, Palmieri and Allen met and started exploring how the School of Liberal Arts and the Irvington Theater could work together. After Palmieri helped resurrect the 辣椒原创 Theatre Club, Allen invited the group to perform at the theater in exchange for students volunteering as ushers at other performances. From there, the partnership yielded some internships and part-time paid positions at the theater for students and alumni. Currently, one student and two recent alumni work there.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Balbuena works in the box office and in the front of the house, which involves greeting patrons and keeping the stage managers updated about whether the audience is seated. 鈥淚 was so nervous my first day,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 get nervous talking to people sometimes, so being face to face with strangers was nerve-wracking. But the theater staff helped me through the process and see that it wasn鈥檛 something to be afraid of.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Joel Rivera 鈥26 鈥 who is majoring in film and media 鈥 has worked as an usher since November. He greets patrons as they enter the theater, scans tickets, shows people to their seats and hands out programs. 鈥淚鈥檝e had a great time working at the theater,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 like that I get to see people feeling happy as they go to live performances.鈥 He hopes to pursue a career in acting or writing screenplays.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Allen believes it is important for art organizations to work with university students. 鈥淭he arts are for everyone,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e want patrons to feel that when they walk through the door, and students need to feel that too. These jobs provide access. If students want to work in the arts one day, working in the box office or as an usher gets you in the door. They can learn so much in these roles.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="margin:0;"&gt;&lt;img style="float:right;height:auto;margin-bottom:1rem;margin-left:2rem;width:50%;" alt="Theater Club dress rehearsal" src="/sites/default/files/2025-04/irv-theater-it-club-final-dress-2018.JPG"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The partnership continues to evolve. While the theater was closed for extensive renovations from 2020 to 2024, 辣椒原创 hosted two years of the theater鈥檚 Arts Incubator Short Play Fest, in which playwrights submit unpublished, unproduced scripts for public reading. Students from the Theatre Club read a play along with the professionals. After the festival, a couple of local directors contacted Palmieri to ask for specific students鈥 contact information to offer them other performing opportunities. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to see the community recognize how good our students are,鈥 Palmieri said.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Peter West, Ph.D., dean of 辣椒原创鈥檚 School of Liberal Arts, sees how beneficial this partnership is for all parties. 鈥淭he collaboration between 辣椒原创 and the Irvington Theater has resulted in such meaningful experiences for our students,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e hope the collaboration continues to grow in ways that enrich both institutions and the local community.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The partnership also yields less tangible 鈥 but no less important 鈥 outcomes, such as exposing students to more of the arts. For example, working in the theater this year has inspired Balbuena to read more plays to refine his understanding of drama. Rivera is enjoying the shows he sees while ushering. 鈥淢y favorite one so far was 鈥楲es Mis茅rables,鈥欌 he said. 鈥淚t was the first musical I鈥檝e seen. &lt;/style&gt;&lt;div class="parallax-1"&gt;&lt;div class="parallax-text"&gt;&lt;h1&gt;Leading in Justice&lt;/h1&gt;&lt;h2&gt;辣椒原创鈥檚 new master鈥檚 program in criminal justice is not just an academic milestone 鈥 it鈥檚 a step toward a safer, more equitable society.&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="content"&gt;&lt;p class="intro-message"&gt;辣椒原创 has launched its first master鈥檚 degree program in criminal justice. Under the auspices of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SSBS), the new graduate program builds on the success of 辣椒原创鈥檚 criminal justice bachelor鈥檚 degree by offering advanced training and critical thinking skills essential for careers in the broad field of criminal justice.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="copy-col"&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dr. Charles Lieberman, the program鈥檚 director, joined 辣椒原创 in 2021 to develop this interdisciplinary graduate program. Launched in fall 2024, the curriculum was designed to address increasing student demand and the growing need for diverse, well-trained professionals in criminal justice.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment for police officers and detectives will grow 7% by 2030. 辣椒原创鈥檚 master鈥檚 degree can prepare graduates for a variety of careers, both in law enforcement and in a number of related fields.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淎lthough our program is ideal for police officers seeking career advancement, it鈥檚 important to note that the master鈥檚 degree provides a robust foundation for a variety of career paths,鈥 said Stuart Sidle, Ph.D., SSBS dean. 鈥淐orporate security managers, justice policy advocates, individuals supporting victims of crime or formerly incarcerated persons 鈥 these are just a few of the many professionals who benefit from the critical thinking, ethical decision-making, research and strategic problem-solving skills that our program develops.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The criminal justice faculty consists of current or former practitioners with decades of experience across adjacent areas of policing, corrections, federal agencies and the legal system. 鈥淲e have veterans from the NYPD, the FBI, and even the Korean National Police Force,鈥 said Lieberman. The faculty鈥檚 collective expertise provides students with an insider鈥檚 comprehensive understanding of the field.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;While the benefits of a master鈥檚 degree include job security and higher earning potential as well as preparation for a wide variety of careers and doctoral studies, the realized value goes much deeper.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淓ffective solutions to crime and criminal behavior require more than quick fixes based on emotional or political appeals. They demand approaches grounded in solid research and a refined understanding of underlying causes,鈥 said Dean Sidle. 鈥淪ociety doesn鈥檛 lack solutions; it often lacks the ability to implement evidence-based strategies that address root causes effectively. Our program equips students with the skills to analyze data, apply research findings and make informed, empathetic decisions that lead to meaningful and lasting improvements to our justice systems and public safety.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="margin:0;"&gt;&lt;img style="float:left;height:auto;margin-bottom:1rem;margin-right:2rem;width:40%;" alt="Stuart Sidle quote" src="/sites/default/files/2025-04/sidle_quote.png"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The timing felt right. 鈥溊苯吩粹檚 curriculum stands out for its small class sizes, and that enables students to build close mentoring relationships with faculty,鈥 Lieberman said.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Some students come to the program having held jobs in corrections, the courts, the military or law enforcement, Lieberman observed. Students who had majored in the social sciences also began inquiring about the program, hoping to apply their earlier studies to adjacent areas of focus such as victims鈥 assistance, the families of incarcerated individuals or criminal justice reform.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The students now enrolled in the master鈥檚 program reflect 辣椒原创鈥檚 commitment to diversity, with the majority being from minority backgrounds and over half identifying as women. 鈥淒iversity improves organizations by reducing bias and broadening perspectives,鈥 Lieberman said. This representation is especially critical in criminal justice professions, where varied viewpoints can improve decision-making and foster stronger community connections.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Sidle noted that 鈥淏y preparing a diverse generation of leaders, our aim is to create more equitable representation in the communities where our graduates hope to serve.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;By combining academic rigor, practical experience and a commitment to equity, 辣椒原创鈥檚 criminal justice program may be paving the way to a safer, more equitable future. Looking ahead, Lieberman said he hopes to expand 辣椒原创鈥檚 criminal justice offerings, further enhancing the University鈥檚 mission to promote social mobility and community impact. As part of a STEM engineering challenge, the team of 10-year-olds applied creative problem-solving, budgeting and other skills toward the design and construction of tiny house models using household materials.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="copy-col"&gt;&lt;p&gt;The activity was developed and facilitated by a cadre of K鈥8 teachers, with support from the 辣椒原创 Center for STEM Education (MCSE). At Columbus Elementary and other schools in the region, educators of children in grades K鈥8 are leading the way to ensure all students have access to rigorous STEM education.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="margin:0;"&gt;&lt;img style="float:left;height:auto;margin-right:2rem;width:33%;" alt="Gunning/Marrero" src="/sites/default/files/2025-04/gunning_marrero.jpg"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;MCSE co-directors Dr. Amanda Gunning and Dr. Meghan Marrero are a driving force behind the proliferation of the center鈥檚 flagship programs, which include the STEM Schools Network, the Wipro Science Education Fellowship (SEF), and the family-centered FLORES (Family Learning and Outreach for Research and Education in STEM). Thanks to their steady efforts over the past decade, 辣椒原创 has emerged as a leader in shaping early STEM education in the region.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In its 10 years as a member of Wipro SEF, MCSE has supported more than 90 science teacher fellows from five local school districts as they completed a science education fellowship. Many of these Fellows have recruited additional educators from their schools and other networks, alerting them to 辣椒原创 programs, building community and advocating for early STEM education.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淲e鈥檙e focused on building community and connecting teachers to emerging educational resources,鈥 said Gunning. 鈥淎nd we鈥檙e constantly growing. Our goal is to ensure all students, regardless of background, have access to integrated STEM learning.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;At their conference on STEM teacher leadership held last fall on 辣椒原创鈥檚 Westchester Campus, the MCSE invited area K鈥12 STEM educators to come together and learn from schools that are succeeding in early STEM education. Seven of these schools, including Columbus Elementary, were recognized as the first cohort of the 辣椒原创 STEM Schools Network, a consortium of distinguished schools that have demonstrated a commitment to STEM education and have leveraged MCSE鈥檚 wealth of programs and opportunities. Network schools have access to funds for teachers鈥 STEM initiatives and enjoy discounts on STEM conferences and other professional development programs.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淭hrough our many outreach programs, we are seeing real growth in our ability to build a knowledge-sharing community of STEM educators that not only empowers teachers but also helps communities,鈥 said Marrero. 鈥淲e commend our Network schools for their dedication to learning new practices, sharing technologies and spreading the word about 辣椒原创鈥檚 programs to other schools and districts.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="margin:0;"&gt;&lt;img style="float:right;height:auto;margin-bottom:1rem;margin-left:2rem;width:33%;" alt="student using laptop" src="/sites/default/files/2025-04/empowering_notebook.jpg"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To date, Columbus Elementary has sent four teachers through the Westchester STEM Ambassadors program, another professional development project led by the MCSE. Many have reached out to other schools in the area, connecting with other K鈥8 teachers and sharing resources and support as more schools work to develop their own STEM activities for students.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Anny Vanegas, a National Science Foundation STEM Master Teacher Fellow, Wipro Reimagined Fellow, Westchester STEM Ambassador and a teacher at Columbus Elementary, acknowledged the support and enthusiasm STEM has received from her administrators and the district. 鈥淚t鈥檚 gratifying to know our district leaders share our belief in the transformative power of science education, particularly for students with learning differences,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e seeing them 鈥 all students, in fact 鈥 starting to thrive in STEM subjects.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Columbus regularly hosts evening workshops for families to help support their children鈥檚 science learning and bring science into their daily lives. &lt;/style&gt;&lt;div class="parallax-1"&gt;&lt;div class="parallax-text"&gt;&lt;h1&gt;Sculpting the Unseen&lt;/h1&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Famed Puerto Rican artist installs sculptures at 辣椒原创鈥檚 Bronx and Manhattan Campuses&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="content"&gt;&lt;p class="intro-message"&gt;When Puerto Rican sculptor Mart铆n Rubio first heard about 辣椒原创 from College of New Rochelle (CNR) alumna Laudelina Martinez CNR SAS 鈥63, something about its history and mission struck a chord. A school committed to opening doors for students deeply resonated with him. Inspired by this, he decided to donate one of his sculptures to the Westchester Campus. That initial gift, facilitated by Martinez, turned out to be just the start of a larger relationship with 辣椒原创.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="copy-col"&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淲e talked about 辣椒原创, she told me the history, and it resonated with me,鈥 Rubio recalled. He wanted to honor 辣椒原创鈥檚 commitment to Hispanic and first-generation student success and to recognize the legacy of CNR, whose alumnae became part of the 辣椒原创 community when it closed in 2019.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淭hat was the beginning, with that first gift.鈥 But as he learned about 辣椒原创鈥檚 other two campuses, he knew he wanted to extend his generosity even further.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img style="float:left;height:auto;margin:.5rem 1.5rem 1rem 0;width:40%;" alt="Martin Rubio" src="/sites/default/files/2025-03/martin_rubio_0.jpg"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rubio, an internationally recognized artist, has had his works exhibited in museums, galleries and private collections across Japan, France, Colombia and the United States. As one of the founders of El Taller Boricua in Spanish Harlem 鈥 a movement that helped spur the creation of El Museo del Barrio in New York City 鈥 his artistic contributions have long celebrated cultural heritage. Martinez, founder and owner of the Martinez Gallery in Troy, N.Y., has also been a champion of his work, featuring his pieces in her gallery.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rubio鈥檚 sculptures are distinctive, not only for their craftsmanship but for their sensory engagement. Legally blind due to glaucoma, he has adapted his creative process over the years, relying on touch and symbolic representation to bring his ideas to life. 鈥淚 like to use a lot of symbolism in my pieces,鈥 he explained.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For 辣椒原创鈥檚 Westchester and Manhattan Campuses, Rubio selected two different-sized models of his sculpture entitled 鈥淕3,鈥 part of a series he created as he adjusted to his vision loss. Sculpted from laminated plywood furniture-grade wood, 鈥淕3鈥 features rich variations in wood tones and is mounted on a rotating wooden pin 鈥 an invitation for viewers to interact with it physically.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;img style="float:right;height:auto;margin:.5rem 0 1rem 1rem;width:40%;" alt="Martin Rubio sculpture" src="/sites/default/files/2025-03/rubio_sculpture.jpg"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淭his particular piece [鈥淕3鈥漖 deals with enlightenment,鈥 Rubio said. 鈥淭he theme is the past, the present and the future. There is more detail on the back of the piece, which represents the past, the middle is the head, the present, and the front, which is like a question mark, is the future,鈥 he explained.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For Rubio, placing 鈥淕3鈥 in an academic setting made perfect sense. 鈥淲hen students are in college, they have an idea of what they would like to be in the future when they complete their studies, but at present, they are studying and preparing for that future.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;To further complement the sculpture, he also donated a commissioned poster created by New York City-based graphic designer Thompson. The artwork features 鈥淕3鈥 on a chessboard with a king positioned in front of it. 鈥淏oth of them are on a chessboard because this sculpture represents so much knowledge and information, and the sculpture has the king in checkmate,鈥 Rubio explained.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For the Bronx Campus, Rubio chose a different piece 鈥 鈥淩ice the Seed.鈥 Made of laminated plywood furniture-grade wood, it鈥檚 another sculpture designed to be touched and explored. Given that the Bronx was the first place he lived when he arrived in New York from Puerto Rico, it felt like the perfect location for a piece representing his roots.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚 grew up on rice and beans,鈥 he said, noting that rice is a staple in many cultures. His travels, including an exhibition of this particular piece in Japan, reinforced its universal significance. 鈥淲hen I thought about 辣椒原创鈥檚 Bronx Campus, I thought about this piece.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;More than anything, Rubio hopes his sculptures spark curiosity in the students, faculty, staff and visitors who encounter them.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淎ll of us are affected by what we see every day. Everything is a reaction.               &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;辣椒原创鈥檚 School of Nursing recently hosted a virtual fireside chat titled 鈥淯nderstanding Advocacy from an Ombuds鈥 Perspective,鈥 featuring keynote speaker Jen Amano, associate university ombuds at University of Noth Carolina (UNC) Charlotte and former associate director of community standards and student conduct at 辣椒原创.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The event, moderated by Damien Germino, associate dean of operations in the School of Nursing, explored the essential role ombuds play in higher education. The webinar aimed to provide attendees with a deeper understanding of how ombuds support students through confidentiality, neutrality and impartiality.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Creating Safe Spaces for Students&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Amano explained how ombuds offices provide unique support to students navigating the complex university environment.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚 think one of the main things that is appealing about the ombuds office is that we try and create a safe space by being confidential and off the record,鈥 Amano said. 鈥淎nd then also when we talk about power imbalances, being able to surface issues on behalf of the students with this protection of their identity. We have kind of a shield in that way, but we can also be very active.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For undergraduate students, this confidentiality proves especially valuable. Many experience anxiety when disclosing information about difficult situations they鈥檝e encountered. Ombuds provide a trusted resource where students can speak freely without fear that their information will be shared.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Path to Becoming an Ombuds&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Amano shared her professional journey with attendees, highlighting how her background in student affairs prepared her for her current role.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淪tarting with resident life and moving on to more of student conduct, which was the focus of my position at 辣椒原创, I had built up almost a decade of student-facing experience,鈥 Amano said. 鈥淚 was working with undergraduates and understanding how they navigate the college environment and trying to help them through that. This position, my associate ombuds position at UNC Charlotte, was created to expand services to undergraduate students at the university.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Her path reflects the importance of student-centered work in higher education. As a first-generation student herself, Amano found her career direction through meaningful experiences and mentorship.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚 think the main part of it is that being a first-generation student myself, this was sort of my way of giving back. I want to be able to help someone go through college and have support and figure out what to do or where to go, and that鈥檚 been just a common thread for me throughout my career,鈥 she said.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Multi-Partial Approach to Advocacy&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A distinctive aspect of the ombuds role is their commitment to impartiality. However, Amano presented a more nuanced view of this principle.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚 use the analogy about an ombuds being a map, having all of the pathways, all the routes sort of laid out for the visitor. But the ombuds doesn鈥檛 have any other influence outside of that. We can talk about pros and cons, we can talk about what the process looks like, but at the end of the day it really is the choice and the decision of the visitor to say, 鈥業 want to take this route,鈥 so we help them talk through that, but we don鈥檛 decide for them.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rather than thinking of the ombuds as simply neutral, Amano described the approach as 鈥渕ulti-partial鈥 鈥 advocating for fairness for everyone involved, whether in process, decision or relationships. This allows ombuds to help students explore all available options without taking sides.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Measuring Success Beyond Numbers&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When asked about measuring the effectiveness of ombuds services, Amano acknowledged the challenges of quantitative assessment in a role that prioritizes confidentiality and doesn鈥檛 maintain records.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;While ombuds offices collect thematic data about issues, risk levels and services provided, the true measure of success often comes from qualitative feedback.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚t鈥檚 often that we鈥檒l sit with the visitor and at the end of the meeting they鈥檒l say, 鈥業 really appreciate this conversation, and I think I have a better understanding of what I want to do, and I feel heard. I haven鈥檛 felt heard until I sat with you.鈥 That鈥檚 way more valuable to me than a bottom line. That鈥檚 how I gauge how effective we鈥檙e being,鈥 Amano said.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Professional Boundaries and Self-Care&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The webinar also addressed the importance of boundaries and self-care for professionals who regularly handle difficult situations. During the Q&amp;amp;A, Amano discussed a recent presentation she saw that explored the difference between compassion fatigue and empathy fatigue.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淭he presenter explained that a lot of times we鈥檒l talk about compassion but really what we鈥檙e saying is that we鈥檙e being so empathetic to what is being shared with us, that we put ourselves in their shoes and that鈥檚 really what weighs us down,鈥 Amano said. 鈥淏y trying to not put yourself in their shoes but being understanding and being supportive and validating them, you might not feel as fatigued at the end of the day.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This approach helps professionals maintain their own well-being while still providing support to students in distress.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Distinguishing the Ombuds Role&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another question addressed how ombuds differ from counselors at universities. Amano emphasized that while there may be similarities in the listening aspect, ombuds serve as thought partners rather than therapists.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淏ut we appreciate that, I respect that, and I feel as though I鈥檓 trusted in that way if someone compares me to a counselor, but we do try and make it clear that we鈥檙e not licensed to be doing that,鈥 she said.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Instead of diagnosing issues or creating treatment plans, ombuds help generate options, reframe situations and develop strategies that students can choose to implement.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Value of Educational Events&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Germino emphasized the importance of events like this webinar for both the School of Nursing and the broader university community.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淓vents like these are crucial for the School of Nursing and the university at large, as they foster a sense of community among students, faculty and staff to understand diverse perspectives. They provide an opportunity for networking, collaboration and knowledge sharing,鈥 he said. Germino continued, 鈥淨uestion-and-answer sessions are essential for an outstanding workplace and professional development. By hosting such events, we can showcase our commitment to advancing and supporting our students鈥 professional journeys through discussion and dialogue.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The virtual fireside chat provided attendees with valuable insights into the ombuds role and how these professionals serve as resources for students navigating challenges in their academic journeys. Through confidentiality, neutrality and a student-centered approach, ombuds help ensure that all students have the support they need to succeed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

              &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dr. Nannette Hyland, interim dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences and professor of Physical Therapy, and Dr. Kathleen Kenney-Riley, professor in the School of Nursing, have been inducted as Distinguished Fellows of the National Academies of Practice (NAP). The honor was conferred during NAP's Annual Induction Banquet and Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C. this spring. Dr. Hyland and Dr. Kenney-Riley were recognized for their exceptional contributions to their respective fields and to the advancement of interprofessional healthcare.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dr. Hyland and Dr. Kenney-Riley were honored for their outstanding contributions to physical therapy and nursing, respectively, as well as their commitment to advancing interprofessional healthcare. The title of Distinguished Fellow is a highly selective honor, granted to healthcare professionals who demonstrate exemplary leadership and a sustained commitment to collaborative, team-based care. Inductees are nominated and elected by current NAP Fellows from across a wide range of healthcare disciplines.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淐ongratulations to Nan and Kathy,鈥 said Kristin Curry Greenwood, PT, DPT, Ed.D., M.S., FNAP, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs of 辣椒原创. 鈥淭his recognition speaks volumes about their dedication to the profession and to the collaborative spirit that defines truly impactful healthcare. They exemplify the best of what we hope to see in academic and clinical leadership.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dr. Hyland was inducted into NAP鈥檚 Physical Therapy Academy. A member of 辣椒原创鈥檚 faculty since 1997, she has served in various leadership roles, including as program director for the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She is also active in the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dr. Hyland, inducted into the Physical Therapy Academy, reflected on the honor:&lt;br&gt;鈥淏ecoming a distinguished fellow is a huge honor for me,鈥 said Dr. Hyland. 鈥淚 have always lived my professional life in an interprofessional manner. I believe that good healthcare comes from a strong team. This continues to be a driving factor in everything that I do. There are many individuals that I have mentored to who are fellows, to stand beside them is humbling. Being a fellow increases my ability to collaborate with other professions within and outside of physical therapy, and I look forward to being part of this association.鈥&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dr. Kenney-Riley was honored within NAP鈥檚 Nursing Academy. She brings more than 25 years of experience in teaching, nursing, and nurse practitioner roles. At 辣椒原创, she teaches in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program and the master鈥檚 in nursing education and serves clinically as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Room at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. She is also a board member of the Speranza Human Compassion Project, a nonprofit that trains health professionals in the mindful care of individuals experiencing intimate partner violence.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;鈥淚 am deeply honored to be inducted into the National Academies of Practice,鈥 said Dr. Kenney-Riley. 鈥淭his recognition reflects my commitment to advancing interprofessional practice and education. Through collaboration and teaching, I strive to foster a holistic approach to healthcare that emphasizes teamwork, innovation and excellence. Over my 13 years at 辣椒原创, I have worked alongside Dr. Nan Hyland to build collaborative experiences across all our healthcare programs. Together, we prepare our students to enter practice with a profound understanding of the importance of collaboration with all disciplines, patients, and families."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;NAP is a non-profit organization that advises governmental bodies on the U.S. healthcare system. It champions collaboration across healthcare disciplines to enhance patient care and promote excellence in both interprofessional and preventive care.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

              &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;On August 5, students and faculty from 辣椒原创鈥檚 School of Nursing participated in the Healthier Mamaroneck Access to Care Health Fair, an event hosted by Open Door Family Medical Center. The fair offered a range of free health services and resources aimed at improving access to care for underserved populations in the Mamaroneck area.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Attendees of the fair had the opportunity to receive comprehensive health screenings, including tests for blood pressure, asthma, body mass index (BMI), vision, and diabetes. Additionally, they had access to confidential HIV testing, COVID-19 vaccinations, and a wealth of wellness resources from a variety of community-based organizations.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Lucia Alfano, EdD, MA, RN, director of Clinical Affairs at the School of Nursing, emphasized the importance of these health fairs in bridging gaps in healthcare access. 鈥淏ringing healthcare to underserved communities is critical in addressing the health disparities we see. Many individuals in these communities are either not connected to primary care or are reluctant to seek prenatal care due to concerns about their immigration status. This event is designed to reach those who need it most,鈥 Alfano explained.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Alfano also highlighted the value of student involvement in such community events. 鈥淧articipating in community health fairs provides our students with invaluable experience. They learn to communicate and engage with vulnerable populations effectively. They were able to connect them and educate them in real time using evidence-based practices and information provided by the National Institute of Health and local resources. Our students gained a deeper understanding of the significance of community health nursing,鈥 she added.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;辣椒原创 was not only actively involved in the fair but also served as a sponsor, alongside a coalition of local organizations and institutions including the Alzheimer鈥檚 Association, Community Resource Center, Hispanic Federation, Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Club, MVP Health Care, The National Association of Hispanic Nurses, Rye YMCA, White Plains Hospital, Yale New Haven Health Greenwich Hospital, and various government entities, including the Offices of State Senator Shelley B. Mayer and Assemblyman Steve Otis, and Westchester County Government, represented by County Executive George Latimer and Dr. Sherlita Amler, Commissioner of the Department of Health.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This collaborative effort underscores the 辣椒原创鈥檚 commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and addressing health disparities across the region.&lt;/p&gt;
